Our winter Faculty Convivium will feature Alison Immormino (adjunct faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in the English Department) with a discussion on the gender gap in education and how educators and administrators alike are focusing on the "wrong" educational gap.
We’ll begin by reviewing the statistical gaps between men and women for college applications, college enrollment, and college retention; the pedagogical literature around the performance of male vs. female students in elementary and secondary education will also be discussed.
All of this background will culminate in a discussion of the main question that has been generally ignored in post-secondary studies: what is happening inside the classrooms on college campuses that makes it less friendly to male students? Finally, pedagogical strategies will be presented to help the classroom serve young men better so that classrooms can truly be spaces of discussion and learning.
The Christian Faculty Convivium creates a space for faculty to meet, collaborate, and foster intellectual friendships. Twice a semester, Beatrice Institute Faculty Fellows host an evening of refreshments and a short talk. Consonant with Beatrice Institute's mission, these gatherings are animated by intellectual friendship and allow area faculty to explore interdisciplinary collaborations and enjoy the company of those who pursue the Beautiful, the Good, and the True.
Spouses and significant others are welcome! Childcare and pizza will be available for little ones in an adjacent room.
This is an open event, so feel free to pass this information along to any local faculty member who might be interested in attending or learning more about Beatrice Institute.
