Fosse’s magnum opus is a searching exploration of identity, love, art, and the mystery of being. The novel is begging to be read out loud in one go because it has no periods–it’s like a single, very long sentence. That might sound experimental and difficult, but it is actually full of simplicity and clarity. Because it is circular and repetitive, you can pick up almost anywhere and get something out of it. You can sleep through parts of it and wake up and know where you are. It has a plot, but it is more like a symphony or a painting. You can drop in at any point and hear the music and see the textures. It’s an object for meditation. Its simple repetitions and layers invite us to relax and let them wash over us like waves. No pressure. No demands. Peace.
