All elements of medicine make use of the visual senses. On physical exam a patient may be jaundiced, awareness of line and form are necessary for surgical planning, and a radiologist may see a seashore on lung ultrasound. However, no form of medicine presents visual complexity like pathology. Line, shape, form, space, color, and texture must be closely observed and united with physiological understanding. This presents a challenge for medical students who often lack prior experience with visual disciplines. Presented here is a new approach to teaching histology and pathology that provides a firm foundation for future studies.
