Concurrently with the heresy of Arianism, and even after the doctrine of the Trinity was formulated in 325 at the Council of Nicea, conflict over Christ’s humanity popped up all over the Christian world. Heresies such as Apollinarism and Nestorianism tried to maintain Christ’s divinity at the expense of his humanity. Contrary to these positions, theologians such as Cyril of Alexandria rose to prominence. In this seminar, we explore what it means to say that Christ is fully human. If Christ is divine, how did he experience what we experience? Is he fully human, or did he just act in a human way, or with a human doppelganger? This seminar will be led by Dr. James DeMasi, Associate Director of Beatrice Institute.
