This event will explore the history and significance of the Pittsburgh Creche--an impressive, larger-than-life representation of the Bethlehem nativity scene, and the only authorized replica of the famous Vatican Creche. Local author and historian of Christian history in Pittsburgh, Bob Jamesson, and Mnsr. Ron Lengwin, who was instrumental in bringing the creche to Pittsburgh, will discuss the origins of this monument and the storied, ecumenical collaboration that relocated the creche to the plaza in front of the USX building downtown and endowed it. Questions we will explore together include the nature of devotional folk art, religious art in public spaces, the impact of an intensely intimate, rural scene juxtaposed to an emblem of Pittsburgh urbanity and wealth, and the history of ecumenical collaboration in Pittsburgh. The event will begin at 5:30 with dinner and presentations downtown, and will conclude in front of the creche.
