Joel Gunderson is a domestic poet and songwriter who focuses mainly on making poems and songs for his lived communities. As the son of an Evangelist, whose ministry took our family to India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, all throughout the United States preaching in tent revivals, and finally to the Philippines, Joel Gunderson conceived of an oral writing structure in order to lean into the nightly inspiration his father experienced at the pulpit. Each night of his father's preaching was built on the same salvific message but often guided by the reaction to the night before and also by the idea of the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. More often than not his poetry and songs display a deep skepticism of any notion of Salvation, but they still simultaneously celebrate, if only in their process, the sort of Orphic effort that was his father's life. Joel Gunderson currently lives in Portland, OR where he makes wine, runs restaurants, and hangs out with his wife and kids. His work has been published in OmniVerse, The Adirondack Review and Poor Claudia.
